Freedom From The Past (Part 2)

In Freedom From The Past (Part 1) I discussed why the Visual-Kinesthetic Dissociation Technique (or Fast Phobia Cure) can be used on any traumatic experience that you can remember to help release the negative emotions and beliefs that experience caused.

For example, if I asked you to imagine something exciting with really vivid colour, so it was large in your mind, all encompassing in fact, with full sound (loud!), and so you felt you were right in the middle of it – your experience of that imagination would be vivid enough to promote a feeling (kinesthetic response).

If I asked you to imagine the same exciting scenario, but on a small black and white screen, silent and watching yourself from a distance – kind of like CCTV footage, you would probably not feel anything like the same excitement. If I then asked you to play that footage quickly, the whole thing would just seem abstract to you.

That is the essence of dissociation. To remove colour, sound, size and, most importantly of all, yourself from the image or memory in question. Then, once those changes have ’stuck’, the memory no longer promotes any feeling.

Let me talk you through it step by step:

(Please note: don’t do this with anything serious or traumatic; you should discuss such matters with a professional before embarking on any kind of change-work).

1- Imagine a memory that you found frightening or upsetting.

2- When you have that memory in mind, play it as if it were CCTV footage of the event: black & white, silent, disassociated so you can see yourself from a distance (as you were at that time) and make the screen kind of flat, small, separate to you…

3- When you know how that memory looks playing forwards, now rewind it, play it backwards, all the way back to the beginning. Always looking at it with this ‘CCTV view’: from a distance, small, and black & white.

4- Now that you know how it looks playing forward & backwards, play it forwards & backwards 3 times in total.

5- Then play the memory, in this dissociated CCTV view, forwards & backwards 5 times in total.

6- Repeat step 5 until one of two things happens:

a) The memory just plays in a mechanical fashion; it becomes dull, fuzzy and really, really fast…
b) You start to laugh!

Note: at some points, the memory might ‘fight back’ – re-introducing colour, sucking you back in, adding sound etc. This is the very core of this work – to process the memory in a way that makes the changes you’re forcing on it stick. After a while you’ll ‘break’ the memory, and it will stay in the new mode (black & white, dissociated, silent, small). When this happens, you’ll know because the fear or negative emotion will be gone.

Test it periodically, by stepping into the memory and seeing if you can get any of the old feelings back. Eventually, you’ll be able to feel 100% disconnected, emotionally speaking, from the memory.

And by now perhaps you’re beginning to understand that this just doesn’t cure ‘phobias’. Any event where negative emotions and beliefs are still being caused can be processed in this way. Events that have perhaps lead to low self-esteem, eating disorders, anxiety or panic attacks (although in each of these cases it is wise to have a practitioner talk you through such matters).

So – as I stated in my opening paragraph: this technique or pattern is the most amazing piece of technology I have ever encountered, because it is guaranteed to give you freedom from the past.

And nobody escapes from childhood completely unscathed…

  1. Not a response but a question. Can I use VKD with my own self. I am a guidance counselor by profession, I can not find one who can do the process for me. Is there a defnite step. Please help me.

  2. HI Ester,

    It depends on the problem you’re hoping to tackle. If it is relatively straight forward, then yes – you can use it on yourself following the steps above.

    If this issue is complex, or contains a great deal of emotional upset, you would be better advised to find somebody to guide you through it, in a safe environment where a professional can help you deal with anything difficult that comes up.

    A good NLP practitioner or clinical psychotherapist / psychologist ought to have this technique at his/her disposal.
